Description
I love the painterly effect the out of focus zinnias provided as a backdrop for this macro image of a monarch caterpillar's head. This is a newly molted monarch caterpillar. Its fresh skin is still light in color and the fleshy tentacles are still a bit wet and floppy. On the right side of the face profile, its eyes are visible. Caterpillars have six pairs of very simple eyes, called ocelli. Even with all of these eyes, the caterpillar's vision is poor. Other sensory organs, help the caterpillar navigate and direct food into their jaws.
As an artist, passionate butterfly gardener, butterfly whisperer, caterpillar wrangler, and student of nature, I enjoy sharing and teaching about my passion through my photography. Thank you for joining me here on this flight into print on demand. More of my artwork can be found on nancydenmark.com.
