Milkweeds are the only host plants that support the monarch lifecycle. I prefer planting native milkweeds to better support monarch health. The Asclepias perennis ~ Aquatic milkweed is one of the easiest to establish in SE Texas. It doesn't really have greater water needs than other milkweeds but can certainly tolerate wet conditions. It can also grow in shade.
As an artist, passionate butterfly gardener, butterfly whisperer, caterpillar wrangler, and student of nature, I enjoy sharing and teaching about my passion through my photography. Following a full time career as a self employed jewelry artist, I've moved into a semi-retired mode to make room for other things in life, like butterfly gardening. I'm rarely outside without a camera, as capturing "in the moment" nature photos is part of my garden experience. My photographs have become my teaching tools, and often inspire others to plant for pollinators. My image descriptions might often include informative text about the subject matter, as I enjoy teaching others how to attract a wide diversity of butterfly species to their own yard.
